Where to Stay in Nusa Lembongan

Last summer we visited Nusa Lembongan, which is one of many small island that belongs to Bali in Indonesia. Nusa Lembongan offers everything from small privately owned guesthouses that you cannot find anywhere online, to luxurious 5-star hotels. In this post we will share the best options on where to stay in Nusa Lembongan, so that you hopefully do not end up in the same situation as we did.

How to get to Nusa Lembongan from Bali

It is very easy to get to Nusa Lembongan from Bali; all that is needed to escape the traffic and many tourists is a short 30 minutes boat ride (with the fast boats). It is possible to go either by slow boat or the more expensive fast boat. The boats to Nusa Lembongan departs from Sanur beach on Bali.

Either book a your trip from one of the many small tourist stands in Bali which includes pickup from your hotel and boat ticket. Or go to Sanur (the harbor in Bali) with a Taxi or Uber and then just get a boat ticket from one of the boat companies. The price should not be more than 30$ for a return ticket.

Remember that no matter which boat you are going with, you will have to wade through shallow water to get both to the boat and to the beach. Therefore, wearing shorts, a skirt or a dress and flip flops is recommended.

How We Found a Great Place to Stay in Nusa Lembongan

We went to Nusa Lembongan trying to be spontaneous by not booking any accommodation in advance. Since we went during high-season, almost everything was fully booked. We hired a motorbike and drove around more or less the whole island, asking every hotel that looked nice if they had a room available; without any luck.

After spending almost half the day on finding accommodation in Nusa Lembongan, our adventure ended up with us being exhausted, frustrated and hungry. Finally, we gave up and found a gorgeous place through booking.com called The Jinggas Villas. We had a fantastic stay at Jinggas Villas, and even though our day did not start very well it ended up perfectly! However, we know that there are lots and lots of options on where to stay in Nusa Lembongan and we would like to share some of these options.

What Neighborhood to stay at in Nusa Lembongan

There are three main villages on the island; Jungut Batu, Mushroom Bay and Lembongan Village. Jungut Batu and Mushroom Bay are the most popular areas for tourists. Therefore, these are the areas where you can find the most activities as well as cheap accommodation and restaurant options. Besides these villages there are smaller areas that offers different experiences. These are known as Dream Beach and Sunset Beach.

Jungut Batu

Jungut Batu is located in the northwest of Nusa Lembongan and is one of the bigger areas on the island. There are a lot of accommodation options in this area and several places to eat. This area of Nusa Lembongan offers white sand beaches and clear water. However, since the majority of the boats arriving to Nusa Lembongan drops the people off at Jungut Batu, this beach may not be the best place to take a swim. If you still really feel like taking a swim, it is possible to find small areas where you can take a dip and cool off.  On clear days, the beach at Jungut Batu offers gorgeous views across the ocean to Mount Agung in Bali. Also, the sunsets from this side of Nusa Lembongan are said to be some of the best.

Jungut Batu is where the majority of budget accommodation options are found. These were traditionally the most popular option for surfers and backpackers. However, after the island was discovered by more wealthy travelers these has become less popular whilst the more luxurious options is now more demanded.

Bukit

To the south of the main beach of Jungut Batu is the hill or bukit. This is where many of the more luxurious accommodations are located. Here you can find several-star hotels and private villas.

Mushroom Bay

To the South-West of Jungut Batu you will find Mushroom Bay. Mushroom Bay offers several water-side restaurant and accommodation options. Everything is located very close to the gorgeous, white sand beach. There is a lot of things going on in this part of the island. Many of the snorkeling boats leave from this beach, you can hire a banana boat or just take a swim in the crystal clear water. Mushroom Bay seems to be one of the most popular villages in Nusa Lembongan for tourists to stay in.

Dream Beach and Sunset Beach (Sandy Bay)

Further south you can find the lesser known beaches. These are known as Dream Beach and Sunset Beach (or Sandy Bay). They are located on either side of the Devil’s Tears (a place you must visit while in Nusa Lembongan). If you choose to stay here, expect less lively areas, with fewer tourists compared to the other areas. This may be great, depending on what kind of experience you want. The accommodation and restaurant options located in these areas are a bit more luxurious and hence more expensive. The accommodation ranges between high mid-range to very luxurious.

Dream Beach is less popular compared to the other areas due to the not-so-swim-friendly beach. There are a lot of big and strong waves and current. If you are not a very good swimmer, you should consider going for a swim in one of the other beaches on the island.

Lembongan Village

The biggest and the least touristy area of Nusa Lembongan is Lembongan Village in the South-East. This is where the majority of the local island families lives permanently. Therefore, you will find barely any hotels in this part of Nusa Lembongan.

A little side note: If you are going to Nusa Lembongan during high-season and you wish to find accommodation whilst on the island, we would recommend you to look up at least one backup option online beforehand. This is to minimize the risk of you getting so exhausted, frustrated and hungry that your day gets ruined.

Budget Accommodation in Nusa Lembongan

There is no lack of cheap guesthouses in Nusa Lembongan, and many of these are not possible to find online. Therefore, one of your options if you are looking for a budget accommodation in Nusa Lembongan, is to just go and find a place while you are there. This way you might find an amazing bargain that is not available to book online and you might get at better price (if you are good at bargaining). Either you can walk or bike around by yourself, or you can ask a local for some guidance. This option however, might not be the best one during high season (we say this based on our own experience).

If you do want to book online here are some suggestions:

Every room includes air condition, WiFi and a bathroom with a shower. There is also a spacious common room, where you can use the big flat-screen TV (if you prefer to watch TV, rather than exploring the beautiful island you are currently visiting).

Mid-Range Accommodation in Nusa Lembongan

Just like the budget accommodation, the mid-range accommodation may be cheaper if you go straight to the hotel instead of booking online. This is because you may be able to do some bargaining, like with the budget options. But just as with the budget options, this is not recommended if you are going during high-season, when a lot of the alternatives will be fully booked.

Here are some of our suggestions if you are booking online:

Linda beach resort

Linda Beach Resort is located in Jungut Batu, 20 meters from the beach and 2.5 km from Mushroom Bay. The area is very popular for snorkeling and diving. This hotel has its own bar, a big terrace, a big pool opened all year and water sport equipments. The Jinngas Villas

The beach is only 700 meters away, Sunset Beach is 1 km away and Mushroom Bay is 1.5 km away. Staying at Jinggas VIllas means that you have the opportunity to choose between a quiet, relaxing night or going a couple of hundred meters away and take part in all the night activities going on in different areas on the Island.

Dinner and lunch is possible to enjoy at the bed and breakfast, since the hotel has its own restaurant. They also have a barbecue and a bar, two nice pools, free WiFi and they offer scooters for rent for their guests. This bed and breakfast also has great Reviews and a really good reputation. Remember that they only have a few bungalows so it might be fully booked rather early.

A double room with breakfast included and with a Beautiful view is 44 dollars per night (well spent Money if you ask us). Every room has its own bathroom with a hot/cold shower, a kettle, air condition, and free WiFi. Some rooms also offers a seating area where you can sit and relax, perhaps with a drink from the bar in your hand.

This ended up being the Place we stayed in, and we couldn’t have been more pleased with our stay. Everything was perfect; the food, the wonderful family that owns the Place, the cute bungalows, the Amazing outside shower (and toilet), the pool, the location, the silence and the possibility to really relax for once. If we ever go back to Nusa Lembongan (which we probably will), we will with no doubt stay at Jinggas Villas. The Place is extraordinary.

Royal Retreat Villas Lembongan

If you prefer to stay closer to the lively areas, this bed and breakfast might be just the one for you. Royal Retreat Villas is very close to Mushroom Bay, only 400 meters to the beach. You can easily walk to the more bubbly area within 5 minutes. Even though this B&B is located rather Close to Mushroom Bay, it is relatively quiet so you probably wont be disturbed during the night. Luxury Accommodation in Nusa Lembongan

If you are looking for a luxury accommodation it is probably the easiest to book online, unless you prefer to go there and see the place first. This is because it will probably be difficult to haggle on the price anyways, since it usually is not local families running these places, but businesses.

Anyways, here are some suggestions:

Mahagiri Resort Nusa Lembongan

Mahagiri Resort is a 5-star hotel with huge pools, its own private beach and a central location. This resort is found in Jungut Batu, and it is very convenient to move from the hotel to basically everything else interesting on the Island. On the resort there is a convenience store as well.
