STAYING AT: Balconitel Boutique Hotel, Phnom Penh

Not long ago, Pajam and I had our 5-year anniversary. Due to lots of activities and traveling back and forth, we hadn’t had the chance to celebrate – until we headed to Phnom Penh. By now we were very keen to spoil ourselves for a couple of days and not have to think about anything else but ourselves. Therefore, we decided to take the opportunity and turn our days in Phnom Penh to something extraordinary. As it turns out, we couldn’t have picked a better place than Balconitel Boutique Hotel for this. The only problem we had while staying here, was to find the motivation to drag ourselves out from the hotel, to explore Phnom Penh.

Balconitel Boutique Hotel, rated as a four-star hotel, offers a luxury stay in central Phnom Penh. 22 rooms, a relatively small group of staff and the trees, plants and flowers surrounding the hotel helps giving it a personal touch. Balconitel Boutique Hotel opened its doors to visitors in Phnom Penh only two years ago, and is therefore relatively new. They are working hard to establish themselves as a relaxing oasis to stay in while exploring the hectic and ever growing Phnom Penh.

Balconitel Boutique Hotel consists of 8 floors, including the lobby and the rooftop. In total they have 22 rooms in four different room classes available – Superior Double Room, Deluxe Double-/Twin Room, Balconitel Suite and Family Suite. We were lucky enough to stay in the Balconitel Suite on the 7th floor, which we fell in love with at once.

The huge windows gave the room lots of light and the high ceiling made it feel even bigger than the official 68 square meters. There were lots of space for the both of us to spread out and make ourselves comfortable. We could’ve spent hours in the amazing waterfall shower or the huge bathtub from where we had a crazy view of Phnom Penh. After a lovely shower, we could cuddle up in the comfy sofa with the big bathrobes available in our room.

We watched the sun rise above the city and the tall skyscrapers through the enormous window opposite our super comfortable bed almost every morning. And during evenings we could watch the sun set from our balcony. If you ask us, this was way better than watching the big flat screen TV in our room.

Balconitel Boutique Hotel has an indoor pool and a rooftop jacuzzi. Our days were mostly spent in the big sunbeds by the jacuzzi, from where we could work on our tans… And be close to the rooftop bar and restaurant. The rooftop had great sun-location and the water in the jacuzzi was a perfect, cooling temperature. We watched the sunset from the rooftop almost every evening. It was such a stunning sight, seeing the sun disappear behind the tall skyscrapers and the sky turn red. Some nights were made even better with an amazing drink from the bar. The passion fruit mojito quickly became our favorite.

Once you manage to drag yourself out of the hotel to explore the city, you’ll notice the great location of Balconitel Boutique Hotel. The hotel is a short walk from to many of the great spots in Phnom Penh, including big landmarks, supermarkets and several good restaurants.Β  Some of the most popular landmarks that were within a 10-20 minutes walk from the hotel included the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the Royal Palace Phnom Penh, the Russian Market and the biggest shopping mall in Phnom Penh – Aeon Mall.

There were always several tuk tuks right outside the hotel, ready to take you anywhere you want to go. Also, the hotel has two bicycles available for use at no cost. We used these almost every evening and it was very convenient and lots of fun.

In the 24/7 front desk of the hotel, it’s possible to book any day tour one might be interested in. The whole staff crew is incredibly welcoming, helpful and service-minded. We felt very comfortable with asking any of them, any type of question.

The one thing that made this stay extraordinary was, with no doubt, the staff. Everyone greeted and welcomed us with a warm smile from check-in until check-out. They were more than happy to help with anything from answering questions, to take pictures, to cut our watermelons. They really did everything in their power to make our stay as perfect as possible.

Davan in the bar is amazing. His drinks are to die for and we never ever saw him without a smile. We didn’t even have to call him when we needed something. It was enough to simply look his way and one second later he was right there to help.

Nguon Savoeun and Mr. Hun Khnan in the reception bended over backwards to help us with everything. They surely made sure that our over all stay was as good as possible. They made it feel as if no question was a bad question. Every request was taken care of with a warm smile.

The waiters and waitresses in the restaurant never seemed to get tired of our long orders every morning. They served every dish with a smile and always made sure that we were happy with what we got. They even made their way up to the jacuzzi to ask whether we needed anything when we were relaxing in our sunbeds.

The cooks in the kitchen made our taste buds overjoyed every morning at breakfast. Unfortunately, we didn’t try out the lunch or the dinner at the restaurant. This is definitely on our list for our next visit!

The cleaning ladies did a really good job spoiling us with a spotless room every day. Towels were changed as often as we liked and every day the bed was made, the toilet scrubbed and the floor mopped. It always smelled like flowers in our room when they were done with it.

Food & Drinks

Every room comes with breakfast included. The breakfast is served at the rooftop restaurant. It’s not a buffet, which we think is a plus. This means that your breakfast is made freshly at your order. For breakfast there were several dishes to choose among. Whether you prefer western breakfast, American or Asian, Balconitel Boutique Hotel got you covered. The majority of options included meat, but it was no problem for them to adjust it and make it vegetarian for us.

The rooftop restaurant was open all day, so both lunch and dinner were available there as well. The prices are a bit higher than if you choose to go out and eat in a more local restaurant, but they’re definitely reasonable. As with the breakfast, the majority of options for lunch and dinner contained meat. As mentioned earlier, we didn’t get to enjoy neither lunch or dinner at the hotel restaurant, but I’m guessing many of the dishes can be adjusted to a vegetarian diet, as with the breakfast.

The rooftop bar is open all day and offer a variety of drinks. You can choose among alcoholic drinks, soft drinks and mocktails. Everyday between 4pm and 7pm they have happy hour – 2 for 1! As mentioned, Davan in the bar makes amazing drinks. Make sure to try one (or several) out! We highly recommend the passion fruit mojito. As with the food, the prices are reasonable.

A Huge Thanks to Balconitel Boutique Hotel

All in all, we were more than happy with our stay at Balconitel Boutique Hotel. It was the perfect place to call home during our days in Phnom Penh. If we’re ever back in Phnom Penh (which is highly likely), we will make sure to spend our days at Balconitel Boutique Hotel.

We would like to give a huge thanks to everyone that made our stay at Balconitel Boutique Hotel unforgettable!
